lacrimosa

lacrimosa

2014 | 10’ | choir SATB, organ, harmonium, celesta, live electronics

in july 2013, my sister Lieke suddenly died, and lacrimosa is a documentation of the process that followed: juxtaposing my own, sardonic, view of death with different perceptions of it in literature, film and music. As such, lacrimosa drifts through the poetry of e.e. cummings, the music of Nico, the philosophy of Camus & the films of Ingmar Bergman. lacrimosa is a piece that tries to find comfort in indecisiveness, resolution in disharmony and life in death. Central to this is the transformation of a single melody into different tones and genres, from church chant to song. lacrimosa was premiered by Neon – Koor voor Nieuw ste Muziek as a part of the Amsterdams Requiem programme at Orgelpark, which also featured pieces by my dear colleagues Tom Schipper, Brechtje van Dijk, Mathilde Wantenaar and César Lüttger.

Premiere performance by Neon - Koor voor Nieuwste Muziek conducted by Fokko Oldenhuis, with Gonny van der Maten, organ; Tom Dicke, harmonium, celesta and Rick van Veldhuizen, electronics.
